Commander James Emmanuel Kwegyir Aggrey-Orleans

Commander James Emmanuel Kwegyir Aggrey-Orleans is a senior officer of the Ghana Navy and is organic to Ghana Armed Forces Medical Services where he serves as a Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon, Medical Support planner and instructor. Born and raised in Accra, Ghana, he joined the Ghana Navy in September 2010, three years after completing the University of Ghana Medical School. Afterwards he
specialized as a Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon under the West African College of Surgeons and went further to obtain a Master of Public Health (Biological Environmental and Occupational Health) from the University of Ghana followed by a Post Graduate Diploma in Higher Education from the University of Winneba, Ghana. He also holds a diploma in Battle Advanced Trauma Life Support (BATLS) from Support Command, Ministry of Defence, The Netherlands and is a United States National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) certified instructor for Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC).

His work as a surgeon in the 37th Military Hospital involves: managing emergency and elective cases; performing major and minor surgical operations; supportive role in health administration; medical audit and training sub-interns, interns and resident surgeons. Additionally, he is active instructor of military personnel in Tactical Combat Casualty Care and Medical Support for Tactical Operations. CDR Aggrey-Orleans has been tasked with Medical Support planning for real-world and tactical exercises. He has been integral in the medical support planning for Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF) run Medical Readiness Exercise (MEDREX) since 2014 and U.S. Special Operations Command-Africa run EXERCISE FLINTLOCK since 2023.

His deployment experience includes national deployments and United Nations Peacekeeping Missions in the following capacities: Medical Officer for Ghanaian Military Evacuation Team in Libya, 2011; Senior Medical Officer, Ghana Aviation Unit GHAV) Level 1 Hospital in the United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) 2011; Senior Medical Officer, Ghanaian Battalion (GHANBATT) in the United Nations
Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) 2014. Additionally he has served as General / Trauma Surgeon, Ghanaian Level 2 Hospital (GHANMED) in the United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) 2015 and the Force Medical Training Officer, Force Head Quarters, United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) 2019/2020. He is fluent in English and Intermediate in French. He is a family man and dedicated to his Christian faith which he attests is central to all his activities. CDR Aggrey-Orleans is best described as a medical provider, educator and planner committed to lifelong learning with a passion for mentorship, research and systems thinking in austere environments.
