Founder, Nuffield Clinic
Dr Lawrence Kwarteng Appiah
MB CHB, FRCS (Edin), FWACS
Dr Lawrence Kwarteng Appiah is a distinguished orthopaedic surgeon whose vision and unwavering commitment to excellence gave birth to Nuffield Clinic, Ghana’s premier integrated musculoskeletal care centre.
Dr Appiah began his medical journey at the University of Ghana, earning his M.B ChB in 1969. His pursuit of surgical mastery took him to the United Kingdom, where he obtained the prestigious Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1977, a distinction that would later be elevated to Lifetime Fellowship, placing him among an elite circle of surgeons recognised for their enduring contributions to the profession. That same year, he trained at the renowned Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford, an institution whose name and dedication to excellence would later inspire his own clinic in Ghana. He further refined his expertise at the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, and in 1983 was honoured with Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons.
Dr Appiah’s career is marked by distinguished service across three continents. He served as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Monrovia, Liberia, from 1979 to 1988, before returning to his homeland to join Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. There, he took on the dual role of Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in the Department of Orthopaedics and Trauma while nurturing future generations of Ghanaian physicians as Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana Medical School.
Throughout his career, Dr Appiah maintained strong professional ties with the British medical community, undertaking numerous consultant and specialist appointments across the United Kingdom at institutions including King George Hospital Goodmayes, Frenchay Hospital, Bristol, Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, and King’s College Hospital London, among many others. This remarkable breadth of experience across diverse healthcare settings shaped his vision of what exceptional patient care could achieve.
In establishing Nuffield Clinic, Dr Appiah drew upon this wealth of experience and his formative training at Oxford’s Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre to create something unprecedented in Ghana: a comprehensive musculoskeletal care facility bringing world-class orthopaedic, rheumatology, and physiotherapy services to his fellow Ghanaians. His vision was bold yet clear—to bridge the finest traditions of modern medicine with compassionate, accessible care, ensuring that patients would not need to travel abroad to receive treatment of the highest standard.
The name “Nuffield” itself embodies Dr. Appiah’s aspiration: to replicate the calibre of care he experienced during his training in Oxford, transplanted to Ghanaian soil and dedicated to serving his community’s needs.
Dr Appiah’s founding vision continues to guide Nuffield Clinic today. Every patient who walks through our doors, every diagnosis rendered with precision, and every life restored to mobility and freedom from pain stands as testament to the enduring legacy of a surgeon who dared to dream of world-class healthcare for Ghana
