“Supplements Can Harm If You’re Not Eating Right” – Nutritionist Cautions Lupus Patients at Nuffield Clinic Supports Lupus Awareness Day Event.

Accra, Ghana – May 10, 2025
Miss Serwaa Esumaba, a certified nutritionist has warned that overreliance on supplements without proper eating habits can do more harm than good, especially for patients managing chronic conditions like lupus.

Speaking during a multidisciplinary health session to mark World Lupus Day at Nuffield Clinic, the Nutritionist, highlighted a growing concern: patients neglecting meals and turning to supplements as a substitute for nutrition.

“When you eat healthier, your body responds positively,” she said. “Some people take supplements, and it harms them. Others don’t eat at all and believe supplements are supporting them. Many are even underweight. If you constantly find yourself in these situations, you need to be mindful, you’re probably not eating well.”

Miss Esumaba, emphasized that food should be the first and most reliable source of nutrients. She explained that supplements are only necessary in cases of severe nutrient deficiency or under medical advice, not as a replacement for regular, balanced meals.

Her message was delivered as part of an event themed “Empowering Health, Inspiring Hope,” organized by Nuffield Clinic to raise awareness about lupus and promote holistic health strategies.

Alongside her were other healthcare experts, including Dr. Maame Boatema Amissah-Arthur, Consultant Rheumatologist; Miss Priscilla Kushigbeor, Clinical Psychologist; and Miss Elizabeth Sarpong, Physiotherapist. The team addressed various aspects of lupus care, including early diagnosis, mental health support, physical activity, and personalized treatment.
