World Arthritis Day, observed on October 12, 2022, aimed to raise awareness of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs), supporting those affected by arthritis and encouraging early intervention for a better quality of life.
Arthritis refers to inflammation of the joints, leading to joint pain, stiffness, and damage to joint structures. Common types include osteoarthritis (OA), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and gout. While arthritis is often associated with older adults, about 30% of those affected are under 65 years old.
Dr. Nuffield, a medical expert, emphasized, “Many RMDs remain undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, leading to prolonged symptoms and reduced quality of life for patients.”
Key risk factors for arthritis include family history, age, gender, trauma, and obesity. Inflammatory arthritis, such as RA, can also affect other organs of the body.
While arthritis has no cure, early diagnosis and treatment can help manage symptoms. Treatments range from physical therapy and exercise to medications and surgery. Obesity control and regular exercise are also important in reducing joint pain and preventing disease progression.
On World Arthritis Day 2022, people were encouraged to take action by seeking medical attention, getting diagnosed early, and following a treatment plan for improved health.
